Celebrating Music In Our Schools

March is Music in Our Schools Month, and throughout the country, schools and music education advocates come together to celebrate richly diverse and rewarding music education programs. It’s also a time to highlight the growing need to keep music education in schools and to provide the tools to do so.

In cooperation with Little Kids Rock, an organization dedicated to restoring and revitalizing music programs across the country, and Berklee College of Music, Taylor Guitars has joined in a special project, AMP UP NYC. This endeavor aims to expand modern band programs to over 600 schools in the greater New York City area. At a media kick-off event held on Friday, March 21, at Lower Manhattan Community Middle School and attended by Hon. Representative Jerrold Nadler (NY-10), Paul King, Executive Director of the New York City Department of Education’s Office of Arts and Special Projects, Roger Brown, President of the Berklee College of Music, and Little Kids Rock founder David Wish, Taylor Guitars presented a partial selection of the over 100 guitars the company has committed to serve New York City schools. Students from two schools performed at the event alongside two special guests: acclaimed producer and drummer Steve Jordan and Tuffus Zimbabwe, keyboardist in the Saturday Night Live Band and a Berklee graduate.

Across town, Taylor was on hand for another event: VH1’s Save The Music Foundation Family Day. This annual event is held at a New York City school and includes interactive exhibits to get children of all ages interested in making music. For a donation benefitting Save The Music, fans could purchase and paint a Baby Taylor.

Taylor’s music education work is not limited to the month of March. Taylor partners with many organizations dedicated to music education on a continuing basis, including the San Diego Music Foundation, Guitars in the Classroom, Guitars for Vets, and the classrooms of our independent dealers who offer guitar instruction, among many others.  In 2013, Taylor donated over 600 guitars to a variety of charitable causes, with an emphasis on music education.
