Our friends at American Songwriter magazine are known for spotting noteworthy performers. Recently they introduced the broader world to Akron/Family, an experimental folk-rock band who has built a following with festival performances at Monolith, Isle of Wight, High Sierra, Coachella and End of the Road. The band dropped by the American Songwriter studios in Nashville, where they played a scaled-down acoustic set.

Comprised of Seth Olinsky, Miles Seaton and Dana Janssen, Akron/Family released S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT in 2010, a follow-up to 2009’s Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free, an 11-song EP that charted at 22 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart. The new album was wrought with organic inspiration, as the band chose to record all of 2009 and most of 2010 at Mount Meakan, an active volcano in Akan National Park, on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, and in a deserted train station in Detroit to inspire the composition and recording.

For the American Songwriter session, the trio played songs including “River,” “Love and Space,” “Gravelly Mountains of the Moon,” and “Canopy,” embracing a stripped-down acoustic approach and using the Taylor GS Mini that was on-hand.
